Not according to Chris Rock and a slew of other black Americans on Twitter, who have found the time to bash America today instead of celebrate with the rest of us.
Apparently, Independence Day is "a white man's holiday".
"Happy white peoples independence day the slaves weren't free but I'm sure they enjoyed fireworks"
And it isn't just him. In fact, his comment sums of the African American attitude pretty well. While there are always exceptions to the rule, the 4th of July does seem to be a white man's holiday characterized by raucous white rednecks professing their love to 'Merica in any way they can. I rarely see any African Americans at my city's fireworks show which draws about 200,000 people a year. And my area is one of the most demographically diverse places in the entire country. Why is this? Of my 10 or so black friends, I know only one who actively participates and enjoys the holiday for what it really means. The rest are strangely silent every time the 4th rolls around, and I know the reason why. The same reason Chris Rock wrote his ridiculous tweet. I never have had the heart to actually ask them what they really feel. Around here in my area, black people celebrate every year with fireworks...by shooting them at people and cars passing by. Last year they shot them at ambulance and fire crews who were working on a heart attack victim. This story landed on the Drudge Report as well as another about a mob of black youths marching down a well known street here yelling at white residents that they would "kill whitey".
I digress. There is definitely more enthusiasm for this holiday among white Americans than anyone else. That is a given. But the consensus among the black community seems to be one of hatred and loathing for this country, and they just can't stand seeing stupid, white Americans shoot their fireworks and celebrate America while overlooking all of the injustices done to "people of color" in America's past. It is a long held psychological ingraining. A sense of disconnect and bitterness towards anything American. America's successes and achievements automatically take a backseat to America's downfalls. I suppose if my ancestors were wronged I would feel the same in some small way. But I certainly wouldn't dwell upon it.
While a small sliver of me can sympathize and understand why they would continue to hold these grudges of past evils, the majority of me is really just fed up. It's hard to see the black community continue to segregate themselves from the rest of society. While they willingly stay on the progressive Democrat plantation, they continue to live in the past and refuse to move on.
I will continue to celebrate the 4th of July.
